Koopman is set to build a logistics centre at the Leeksterveld business park, situated directly on the A7 motorway. This site will serve as the logistics hub for the distribution of parcels, general cargo and pallets to and from Groningen and Friesland, and will act as the starting point for a comprehensive distribution network throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. With a strong focus on electrification, sustainability and attractive workplaces, the centre will play a central role in Koopman’s future logistics operations.
The planned centre will be designed to fully meet the logistical and technological requirements of both today and tomorrow. It will feature a cross-dock with three times the capacity of the current facility, a parcel sorting hall for the efficient handling of parcels and oversized goods, and fast-charging facilities at all docks, enabling all lorries to be charged simultaneously.
The modern truck workshop will be equipped for maintenance and refurbishment in accordance with the latest standards. Optimal workspaces tailored to the needs of today’s workforce and modern office space for Koopman’s central departments. Koopman is being supported in this development by Volantess.
For its new facility in Leek, Koopman has opted for a unique charging solution: all lorries are charged directly at the loading bay overnight, eliminating the need for a separate charging area. This approach makes optimal use of the available space and is unique in the sector. Solar panels on the roof and smart battery storage provide sustainable energy, which is used efficiently for operations and for charging the vehicles at this site. The site has sufficient connection capacity to accommodate future expansions.
"“At present, 10 per cent of our fleet is electric, but that is changing rapidly. This site supports the ongoing electrification of the vehicle fleet in Leek, with the aim of operating an entirely electric fleet by 2030. This puts us at the forefront of sustainability and efficiency.”
Klaas Koopman — Directeur
The new logistics hub offers a safe, healthy and pleasant working environment. The building is being designed to the BREEAM Excellent standard. Separate traffic routes for lorries, cars and pedestrians ensure additional safety on the site. With a view to the future, a large proportion of the parking spaces for staff’s private vehicles are already being fitted with charging points, thereby facilitating sustainable mobility. In addition, 10% of the total site will be landscaped, contributing to biodiversity and a pleasant working environment for staff and visitors.
"“We want to create a working environment that is not only efficient, but also pleasant and forward-looking. A place where you can work well together, where you feel at home, and where you can develop your career in the long term.”
Harm Koopman — Directeur
The new centre in Leek provides a solid foundation for the further development of logistics services both in the northern Netherlands and beyond. With this new facility, Koopman is underlining its ambition to continue to grow and innovate, and above all to actively improve sustainability. The logistics centre is scheduled for completion in spring 2027.
